Lonely Planet provides a great complement to my reliance on Rick Steves. Between the two I am able to map out wonderful trips, with LP providing the lower end of the cost scale way to go about traveling. Cleanly laid out, written in a way to convey information rather than overawe the reader, their guides are invaluable, timely, and fun.

Just back from a week-long trip to Portugal (which included several regions as well as Lisbon), I strongly recommend this guide!

Having had the chance to review (and use) several other guides on Portugal, including Fodor'sFodor's Portugal, 8th Edition (Fodor's Gold Guides), Frommer'sFrommer's Portugal (Frommer's Complete), EyewitnessPortugal (Eyewitness Travel Guides), I can assuredly say that this was the most informative, comprehensive, practical and well-balanced guide of the bunch.

Yes, it does not give you the most wonderful glossy pictures that Eyewitness provides, and perhaps the description of restaurants and hotels may not be as expansive (though they are solid) as Frommer's, but Lonely Planet achieves the type of balance between facts, background, recommendations and maps that none of the other guides do.

Pair this with Lonely Planet's Portuguese Phrasebook Portuguese: Lonely Planet Phrasebook and you'll be all set to travel.

They haven't really made the kindle version usable. The maps are tiny and you can't zoom in on them to see where you should go. A waste of your money if your buying the kindle edition.

FYI. I am not sharing my opinion regarding to this particular guide book, but guide books in general regarding Portugal. The roads have drastically changed for the better in Portugal. If the guide was written earlier than 2008, it will not be reliable especially if you are travelling in the northern part of Portugal. I am a Luso-American living in Northern Portugal and America. Some of the information that has been published in several different guide books have been inaccurate. For example, the small northern villages do not speak Spanish, the driving directions from Porto to Vila Real are incorrect (suggesting old winding roads vs. the new A24 highway and there is no mention of a Casino/Hotel in Chaves. Just wanted people to know that you cannot believe everything that is published. Love the simplicity and the way Portuguese work to live unlike the US who live to work.....

This book was shipped to me very promptly by the seller, despite the fact that I had selected the standard shipping method. My questions were also answered very quickly via email. I would definitely recommend him and buy from him again.
