Between the two I am able to map out wonderful trips, with LP providing the lower end of the cost scale way to go about traveling. Cleanly laid out, written in a way to convey information rather than overawe the reader, their guides are invaluable, timely, and fun. Rating: 5 / 5 Lonely Planet provides a great complement to my reliance on Rick Steves. I am not sharing my opinion regarding to this particular guide book, but guide books in general regarding Portugal. The roads have drastically changed for the better in Portugal. If the guide was written earlier than 2008, it will not be reliable especially if you are travelling in the northern part of Portugal. I am a Luso-American living in Northern Portugal and America. Some of the information that has been published in several different guide books have been inaccurate. For example, the small northern villages do not speak Spanish, the driving directions from Porto to Vila Real are incorrect (suggesting old winding roads vs. the new A24 highway and there is no mention of a Casino/Hotel in Chaves. Just wanted people to know that you cannot believe everything that is published. Love the simplicity and the way Portuguese work to live unlike the US who live to work..... Rating: 1 / 5 FYI.
